Countries Behind The Ocean's Growing Trash

The Ocean’s Plastic Crisis Has Hotspots

Circularity Hub/LinkedIn

Plastic pollution is not evenly distributed across the world. This striking visualization highlights the countries contributing the largest volumes of plastic waste entering the ocean, measured in metric tons. The Philippines ranks first at 356,371 metric tons, followed by India, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Brazil, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Thailand.

But the bigger story is not simply about ranking countries.

It is about systems.

When waste collection is inadequate, recycling infrastructure is limited, and plastic consumption continues to rise, enormous quantities of waste can escape into rivers and eventually reach the ocean.

The solution requires more than cleanup.

It means designing products for circularity, improving waste collection, investing in recycling infrastructure, reducing unnecessary single-use plastics, and creating stronger systems that keep materials in use.

Ocean pollution is a waste-management challenge—and a circular economy opportunity.

The question is no longer just “How do we clean the ocean?” It is “How do we stop the waste from reaching it?”
